EPA to Reconsider Industrial Air Pollution Standards

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced it will reconsider multiple National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) – rules that regulate toxic air emissions across some of the country’s most energy-intensive industries.

What’s Being Reviewed?

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the agency is launching a review to ensure “appropriate protections for human health and the environment based on the best record possible.” In the meantime, the Trump Administration is weighing a two-year compliance exemption under Section 112(i)(4) of the Clean Air Act for affected facilities.

The initial review will focus on industries including:

  • Integrated iron and steel manufacturing
  • Rubber tire manufacturing
  • Synthetic organic chemical production
  • Commercial sterilizers (medical devices and spices)
  • Lime manufacturing
  • Coke ovens
  • Copper smelting
  • Taconite ore processing

EPA also indicated it may broaden the review to cover other NESHAPs and New Source Performance Standards in the months ahead.

Balancing Deregulation and Environmental Protection

The announcement was framed as part of a larger deregulation effort under President Trump’s “Power the Great American Comeback” initiative. Zeldin described it as one of the most consequential days of deregulation in U.S. history, aimed at lowering costs, supporting energy development, revitalizing manufacturing, and giving states more authority over environmental decisions.

Still, the review has significant implications. NESHAPs regulate pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, arsenic, and heavy metals – substances that can harm both air quality and public health. A pause or rollback of compliance requirements could delay emission reductions, while potentially increasing risks for nearby communities.

What This Means for Industry and Communities

For affected industries, the EPA’s move may provide near-term regulatory relief and cost savings. But for environmental and health advocates, it raises concerns about weakened protections at a time when air quality monitoring and accountability are as important as ever.

The ultimate outcome will depend on how the EPA balances economic priorities with its core mission to protect clean air, water, and land.
