New Study Reveals Underreported Toxic Emissions at California’s Salton Sea

A new study published in GeoHealth has uncovered alarming evidence that hydrogen sulfide emissions from the Salton Sea are far higher and more frequent than previously reported by government air-quality monitoring systems. For the surrounding communities – many of which already face socioeconomic and health burdens – the findings highlight a growing environmental health crisis.

Hydrogen Sulfide: A Hidden Threat

Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas associated with headaches, nausea, fatigue, and long-term neurological and respiratory issues, even at low exposure levels. Researchers found that concentrations around the Salton Sea often exceed California’s air quality standards, particularly in the summer months.

Between 2013 and 2024, communities like Indio, Mecca, and the Torres Martinez Indian Reservation recorded frequent exceedances. At Torres Martinez alone, average readings in August topped the state standard for more than 250 hours each year.

The culprit? The desiccating organic matter in the shrinking lake, where nutrient-rich agricultural runoff fuels algal blooms, kills aquatic life, and produces hydrogen sulfide as it decomposes.

Why Current Monitoring Falls Short

Government sensors currently monitor only three shoreline communities, leaving many areas unaccounted for. Researchers discovered that monitoring sites often sit out of alignment with prevailing winds, systematically underreporting the true scale of emissions.

By placing sensors directly in the lake’s shallow waters, the research team confirmed that hydrogen sulfide levels are consistently high, regardless of wind direction – suggesting that communities without sensors are being exposed without documentation.

A Case of Environmental Injustice

The populations living nearest to the Salton Sea are predominantly Latinx and Indigenous (Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians), and already experience elevated rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Researchers and community advocates describe this as a textbook case of environmental injustice – where vulnerable communities face disproportionate exposure to health risks while gaps in monitoring leave them without adequate protection.

The Path Forward

As the shoreline continues to recede and sulfate levels rise, researchers warn that hydrogen sulfide emissions will likely become more frequent and more intense. They are calling for:

  • Greater investment in community science to fill monitoring gaps.
  • Focused study on public health impacts to better protect residents.
