Sinking Cities: What New Research Reveals About Land Subsidence in the U.S.

A new study published in Nature Cities has revealed a startling truth: all 28 of the most populous U.S. cities are sinking – some rapidly, others unevenly, but all undeniably. And while sea-level rise has long been part of the climate conversation, the more immediate and overlooked threat may be coming from below.

Groundwater Extraction: The #1 Culprit

Using high-resolution satellite data, researchers at Columbia University’s Climate School mapped vertical land movement across the nation’s biggest cities. Their findings? Groundwater pumping is responsible for 80% of the subsidence – as aquifers are drained, the surrounding earth compacts, causing the ground above to sink.

Houston, for example, is sinking in some places at a staggering 5 centimeters (2 inches) per year, with over 40% of the metro area experiencing subsidence above 5 mm annually. Other fast-sinking metros include Dallas, Fort Worth, Las Vegas, and New York City.

The Hidden Risks of Uneven Sinking

The study didn’t just focus on how fast cities are sinking – but how differently they’re sinking. Some neighborhoods are dropping faster than others, and in rare cases, some are even rising due to aquifer recharge near rivers. These differential movements can put enormous strain on buildings, roads, railways, and pipelines.

Even slight uneven subsidence can increase the risk of foundation stress, infrastructure tilting, and costly structural damage. Approximately 29,000 buildings in the densest urban cores are located in high-risk zones, with cities like San Antonio, Austin, and Memphis facing the most severe structural challenges.

Beyond the Coastline: An Inland Issue, Too

Though often associated with rising seas, land subsidence is also affecting interior cities like Denver, Chicago, Nashville, and Indianapolis. Natural causes – like the Earth slowly adjusting after the melting of ancient glaciers – also contribute to slow, steady sinking. In New York, even the weight of more than 1 million buildings may be exacerbating the problem.

Thankfully, the study emphasizes solutions. Researchers recommend a mix of:

  • Land-raising and green infrastructure (like artificial wetlands) to combat flooding.
  • Retrofitting vulnerable buildings and integrating land motion data into building codes.
  • Restricting construction in areas prone to rapid or differential subsidence.

The authors make it clear: subsidence is not just a future problem. It’s happening now. But with the right tools and strategies, cities can adapt and protect their infrastructure.
