3 EPA Accomplishments in the Heartland to Celebrate
Established on Dec. 2, 1970, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency turns 50 this year. In honor of this landmark anniversary, the Region 7 team — serving Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Nine tribal nations — shared some of its recent accomplishments to highlight important work happening in the region.
Here’s a look at a few key achievements shared by Region 7.
Support for Tribes
In 2020, the EPA will provide $1.1 million in funding for tribes in Region 7 — and $65 million to more than 500 tribes nationwide — to build environmental programs in Indian Country. Over the past year, the EPA also issued more than $213 million in State and Tribal Assistance Grant (STAG) funding to states, territories, and tribes to assist their environmental programs.
Renewable Fuels Roundtable
On Dec. 17, 2019, EPA Region 7 joined forces with EPA Region 5 — serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and 35 tribes — to host a Smart Sectors meeting in Lenexa, Kan. The roundtable focused on agriculture, and renewable fuels representatives from across the Midwest were on hand to provide information about environmental protection programs.
The EPA Smart Sectors program serves as a platform to collaborate with regulated sectors to create practical solutions that better serve the environment and public health. Designed to improve communication and boost operations efficiency at the EPA, the program helps address executive orders on regulatory reform, energy independence, permit streamlining, and the re-evaluation of major regulations, according to the EPA.
Environmental Justice Grants Awarded
EPA Region 7 awarded $120,000 in Environmental Justice grants to the communities of Kansas City, Mo., St. Louis, and Lyons, Neb. Designed to educate, empower, and enable these communities, the funds will help identify and address local health issues.
The EPA’s EJ program works with various organizations — i.e., federal, state, tribal, and local governments, business and industry, nonprofits, and academia — to help eradicate environmental and public health conditions faced by disproportionately impacted low-income and/or minority communities.
