Brownfield Redevelopment – Dust Monitors, PID’s, Sound

Many companies have a positive economic impact on the communities where they’re located, but unfortunately do not offer the same benefits to the local environment. The Environmental Protection Agency created the Brownfields Program to hold companies responsible for this damage.

Brownfield Development is defined by the EPA with certain exclusions and additions as, “the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.”

As of October 1, 2013, the EPA Brownfields Program had leveraged 10,141 jobs, made 4,543.57 acres available for reuse, and completed 122 cleanups ─ in FY 2013 alone. The program was designed to promote area-wide planning and can increase residential property values near Brownfield sites by 5.1%-12.8% when cleanup is completed.

Kodak Rebuilds Eastman Business Park

Kodak recently received final approval from a federal bankruptcy court judge to begin the Eastman Business Park clean-up project, ─ a joint effort between the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and other federal agencies.

Under the terms of the settlement, Kodak will place $49 million into an environmental trust fund to finance ongoing and future clean up and monitoring at the business park and the Genesee River. The DEC will donate an additional $50 million for remediation costs, if total expenses exceed the initial investment by Kodak.

Kodak faced several environmental claims in its bankruptcy case, including from state and federal agencies for damage to sediments in the lower Genesse River from wastewater discharges from one of the company’s treatment plants.
